Why are natural stones particularly suitable for terraces?
When choosing materials for terrace design, there are significant factors that must be taken into account. Besides the location of the terrace, the specific use is one of the most important points. For example, do you want to use the terrace primarily in nice weather or also when the weather is unstable? Who will use the outdoor area? If you have children, the issue of slip resistance and slip resistance of the flooring comes to the fore to a particular extent.
Natural stone slabs meet a particularly high quality standard under many aspects of terrace and garden design. Almost all types of natural stone meet the most important criteria:
-
Longevity
-
Robustness
-
Slip resistance
Many are even frost-resistant, and especially light shades do not guarantee overheating of natural stone slabs in midsummer.

What care and cleaning require natural stone slab terraces?
Although natural stone slabs on the terrace are generally pleasingly easy to maintain, some aspects should be taken into account in the process. Here are some tips:
Impregnation
To make natural stone slab terraces even more resistant to weather influences, we recommend impregnation during or after laying. This particularly influences the absorbency of the natural stone. The resulting lotus effect helps not only when it rains, but also when other liquids, such as from food or drink, get on the floor. A light wiping is then sufficient. In the case of marble slabs, it should be noted that they often require a special product for impregnation.
Keep clean
Even though natural stone slabs can withstand quite a bit, please be gentle with them when caring for them. Regular sweeping is often enough to remove light dirt. However, it is better to use a broom with soft bristles. Coarser dirt, for example caused by muddy animal paws or dirty shoes, can usually be removed quickly and easily with clear water from the garden hose.
Detergents & processing equipment
If the dirt on your natural stone slabs is stubborn, choose professional special cleaners. Only these are gentle enough to prevent long-term damage to your natural stone patio. They are also suitable for regular basic cleaning and can sometimes extend the life of your floors. Dilute the agent with water according to the instructions. You should stay away from any household cleaning agents or even acids. Except for porcelain stoneware, most natural stone patio tiles will not forgive you. Scratches or sharp-edged brooms and brushes are also unsuitable for natural stone slabs.
In the terrace exhibition in Vienna at SCHUBERT STONE, you will find numerous high-quality stones for terraces and outdoor areas. Levante Crema fine grey, for example, whose structure is reminiscent of the sand of the South Seas. This stone brings holiday feelings directly to the garden terrace. These stone slabs get their light creamy colour by roughening the surface. With the help of rain, the limestone gently and permanently eliminates footprints and scratches.
FAQ
Below we answer some more of the most common questions regarding natural stone slabs in garden and outdoor design.
What are the key advantages of natural stone on the terrace?
Natural stone slabs cover the most elementary properties that should have outdoor floors: They are robust, weather-resistant and slip-resistant. A wide range of natural marbling and colors serves many tastes and design preferences.
What are the disadvantages of natural stone slab terraces compared to other materials?
Terrace tiles of natural stone are often much more expensive than other floor coverings. When choosing the color of stone tiles should also take into account that dark-colored floors can quickly heat up in the summer.
Can I also use a pressure washer on my flagstones in the garden?
Yes and no. That depends entirely on the type of stone. Granite, for example, is usually able to withstand the resulting high water pressure. However, other natural stone slabs react sensitively and stone structures can be easily damaged. To be on the safe side, contact your dealer before planning any cleaning.
Road salt and natural stone slabs: is it compatible?
Although some types of natural stone, such as granite, cope better with de-icing salt than others, we do not recommend the use of de-icing salt. With travertine, sandstone or limestone, for example, its use can sometimes lead to unsightly discoloration. Better: When buying natural stone for paths and driveways, look for frost-resistant types of stone. Sand or grit also offer good alternatives to hard road salt.
